CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION

After the 2009 Winter Forum on Aging, SCOPE supported the efforts of local citizens to convene the community around the topic of aging.  As a result, four follow up meetings were held in March, May, August and October. Nearly 65 engaged citizens met to explore topics that would keep the topic alive in the community.  The general purpose of these meetings was to explore what the individual can do and what the community can do in regards to topics such as labeling and stereotyping,  how to best take advantage of the wisdom of sages, the prospects for an Encore workforce in times of high unemployment, etc.

Workgroups

In October of 2009 the Continuing the Conversation group met to discuss topic areas that the Institute could undertake.  Out of this discussion six groups; Doug Ross facilitated the gathering that focused on six key topics; Universal Design; Arts and Vitality; Workforce Potential; Healthcare; Personal Psychology: Identity, Purpose, Connections; Intergenerational Community Development.

Each group assigned a convener that will bring the group together to carry the discussion forward.

At the March 17, 2010 meeting, there was a discussion about collapsing, renaming, and eliminating some of the groups.  Some workgroups have been active and others have only met once or twice over the course of the past few months. The “Healthcare” group remained the same, the “Personal Psychology” group has been combined with the “Arts and Vitality” and now includes Neuropsychology. The “Workforce” group has been renamed to “Training and Workforce Development ” the “Universal Design” group was renamed to “Housing and Residential Regulations” (which includes Universal Design, intergenerational living, mobility) and a group focused on "Economic Development".
